My Herbal Household

Michelle W.

Graphite

  • This piece was drawn alongside a narrative that I had written about Chinese herbal medicine in the context of cross-cultural medicine. I found a childhood photograph of myself sipping from a porcelain bowl and envisioned all the herbal medicine used in Chinese culture in the surroundings. The herbal remedies used in Chinese culture that I had drawn include pipá (loquat), aicão (mugwort), zão (jujube), guilíngão (tortoise jelly), jinyinhua (honeysuckle), chénpi (dried orange peel), juhua (chrysanthemum), dänggur (female ginseng), gouqi (goji berries), and púgöngying (dandelion).

  • Drawing always intimidated me as I took comfort in familiarity, but I realized experimentation is necessary to embody my imagination and creativity to the fullest.
