Mother’s Swing Set

Grace M.

  • As a writer, I intend to share feelings of hope–even in sorrowful situations–through my fictional short stories. This piece came alive in a dream-inspired writing course I took during the summer of 2024, where the prompt was “write about two sides of a doorway.” The story portrays long-lasting depression after the sudden, tragic death of a mother, and the end finalizes the piece with a glimmer of hope for the narrator looking through a doorway. The “swing set” is both literal and metaphorical: an object reflecting past memories and the embodiment of nostalgia. I experimented with repetition and natural imagery to evoke beauty in this story, as the narrator–despite their regrets–eventually accepts the nostalgic joy around them and their internal worth through the memories of a mother. Thus, “Mother’s Swing Set” breathes hope into all who read it, as we all must look through and admire our inevitable doorways.

  • My creativity is my greatest tool to express all my emotions, a tool that allows me to portray both joy and sorrow. Without my creativity, I would not be myself, as this passion of mine breathes life into how I admiringly view and process the fast-paced world around me.
