• Artist Statement

  This piece is the tangible manifestation of a female defense mechanism for unrealistic societal norms. Oysters and Mussels are marine organisms that protect themselves by covering foreign bodies with pearl. Women use makeup to cover physical insecurities just like Mussels with Pearls, with the goal of protecting themselves from their own self consciousness. The observer is oblivious of the fact that the pearl created is just a defense mechanism, meant to protect oneself. You may admire the sight of long eyelashes, perfect skin or blushed cheeks, when really you are looking at a tough suit of armor.
