Migration & Birthday Cake

”Migration” is a poem about my grandmother and also, by extension, my Chinese American identity. I wrote it to capture the feeling I get that I am always looking for the right place to call home and always feel like I’m missing something, whether I’m in the USA or in China with my relatives. With ”Birthday Cake” I wanted to capture the feeling of growing up and the nostalgia for childhood. I have a fear of growing up and leaving my childhood behind so that is what this poem is about. My artistic process with these poems is rooted first in certain specific images evoked in each poem, before expanding into exploring a larger theme and the connections my initial images leads me to.

Creativity to me is the ability to freely express who I am and how I see the world. I also think it captures what makes every individual unique and is not only one’s ability to create, but to create in a way that allows others to learn something about you.
