love letter to the land i’ve never set foot on; men like you don’t make it easy to love mankind; the tabloid confessionals of a selfish daughter

Joyce L.

  • One thing I find most beautiful about poetry is its ability to communicate profound and meaningful ideas in a short space—an idea that was initially unfamiliar with when I primarily wrote fiction. I turned to poetry to express the stronger, intense emotions that were difficult to draw out into a longer story. In these poems, I explored different aspects of my identity as a second-generation immigrant, as a woman, and as a daughter. Most of my poems are formed from singular lines that often later serve as their titles.

  • To me, creativity is the art of seeing and interpreting potential in an original aspect. While it’s almost impossible for an idea to be completely original, I believe that one’s interpretation of an idea changes between each person, and that creativity allows them to wield these ideas in new ways.
