When I was little, I wandered off in a crowd in Las Vegas and was separated from my family. Surrounded by a seemingly endless ocean of denim, I desperately grabbed onto pairs of jeans, hoping any of them would be my parents. Eventually, I stopped wandering and froze in place, feeling helpless. To the crowd, I was practically invisible as I cried on the ground below. Though I was eventually found, those few minutes have stayed with me to this day. In this painting, I wanted to capture the feeling of overwhelming panic, depicting a brightly-colored child engulfed by jarring hues of blue and purple. The contrast of colors exemplifies the child’s feeling of isolation, unable to communicate her needs to the faceless adults around her. I also exaggerated the feeling of fear by enlarging the surrounding adults, with the child at risk of being trampled by those around her.

It means a lot to me. It gives me the chance to collect my old childhood memory and use my imagination to recreate the past images in creative ways.
