This photo was inspired by Mariam, the main character of the book ”A Thousand Splendid Suns. This book takes place in Afghanistan at a time when women had minimal rights and were being controlled by the Taliban. In this story, Mariam is being abused by her husband Rasheed and would face punishments for simple acts such as wanting to learn to read and write. In this photo, I tried to portray this constant state of fear and oppression that these women go through. In order to convey this message I ordered a burka, being what women would wear in this society. Next, I put mascara on my model(my mom) and bled it with water to get a look as if she was crying for a long period. I think this goes to show the intense and sophisticated pain that she experiences along with other women throughout the world.

Creativity means being able to freely express in ways that I am normally held back from. In photography, I feel I can be most creative as it allows me to give a snapshot of how I view the world and express myself.
