Fool Yourself

This piece, performed in a show at Children’s Creativity Museum, represents an intersection of dance and circus arts, two creative disciplines that have helped me really come out of my shell and show my true colors. In these different spheres, I’m influenced by people from vastly different backgrounds and I get to see how diverse art forms and people can interact to challenge and improve each other. My piece is inspired by those interactions - the ways we affect and are affected by those around us. I believe the circus and dance worlds are helping me find myself. I think many of us struggle with this idea of ‘being yourself.’ I’m fascinated with questions like whether ‘being yourself’ means that you resist change or embrace it. How do you know when you’re truly evolving versus emulating others to fit in or be liked? How do you know what makes you, You?

I think for me, creativity means exploring ways to discover my perspective on my internal and external world and express it with a unique voice or style that moves people. Feeling the reaction from an audience is important to me, but there’s also deep satisfaction in the play of creating.
