Dancing in defiance

Watercolor and ink

  • In my artwork I finished a watercolor painting representing our class theme, how humans impact our watershed. The black ink on my painting is called iconography, which are symbols used in a painting that have meaning behind them. The man on the left side represents a Nicaraguan dance called “El Gueguense” which is a form of expression that the indigenous people used to protest against and mock the Spanish colonizers. The man on the right represents an Arab dance called “Dabke” which is a group or individual dance where people create a circle following the leader of the group. This dance has been used during protests in Palestine as a form of resistance against the military. Both are group dances where dancers stand in unity with their own people to fight against the colonizers.

  • I believe creativity means being able to express emotion, stories, and freedom of speech. As well teachings of one’s struggles and success and how we can incorporate these things into our own daily life lessons.
