Crystalline

Mia W.

  • Ever since I was little, I’ve been enchanted by crystals. “Crystalline,” a piece for a double string quartet, depicts the crystalline wonder of each and every gem. The piece revolves around small motifs, and the overlapping, morphing, and passing of these motifs between eight string parts builds up a sonic texture that glistens much like a crystal. Each distinct section is meant to represent the characteristic uniqueness of a crystal’s structure. The spontaneous nature of the piece represents the shimmering randomness of crystal refraction, and though the emotional arc of the piece is far from linear, this choice creates a chaotic cohesiveness that I believe represents a crystal’s formation. The finality of the ending followed by shimmers of the main motif represents a crystal shattering, depicting how even a crystal’s death and debris can be beautiful.

  • My creativity is such an essential part of my life. It takes every complicated emotion, every fear, every unbearable situation, every fork in the road, and offers a guiding light. My creativity is my support, relief, clarity and individuality; I can’t imagine a world without it.
