Coyote On the Prowl

Leo D.

  • Trekking out into the wilds of the North Bay, I never know what creature I’ll encounter, or how fleeting an encounter will be. I might locate seven bobcats, or I might come away empty-handed. Despite this uncertainty, I’m positive I’ll find a sense of serenity away from civilization. Staring into the vertical pupils of a bobcat or the striking blue eyes of a barely six-week-old coyote pup, the stress of school and the chaos of life melts away and is replaced with a primordial feeling of wonder and amazement. In a world where it often seems like everything is figured out, moments like these reignite a sense of awe that we often lose track of in our modern suburban landscape. I do my best to capture this same awe in my pictures, hoping that the feeling flows over the edges of the rectangular sensor to the final, completed image.

  • Creativity means following the light. In wildlife photography, it can seem that any shot you take has already been taken before. But by following the light, one’s photos become distinct. Finding those last rays of light or the eerie glow of morning fog creates a photo that is truly yours.
