Between Rock and a Hot Place

Corrie L.

  • This piece was a part of a project I did surrounding the question ”How does nature influence the connection between people, animals, and the Earth?” I took this picture in Joshua Tree of my mom because I felt like nature played a vital role in shaping the connection between the person, the rock formations, and the idea of being present. The act of walking through such an untouched environment reminds us how nature encourages us to be present and reflect. By capturing this moment, I wanted to show how places like Joshua Tree connect us to the Earth and shape our sense of belonging. This was my second time shooting colored film and developing colored negatives. I didn’t change the temperature much because the warmth of the background was very important to me to convey the the feeling of the desert heat and the true rich hues of the rocks.

  • Creativity is about being able to look at something from a completely different perspective then other people and use that interpretation to build something new. It is about connecting different things together to make something that doesn’t exist and sharing that new thing with other people.
