  • This piece is inspired by a quote from Act IV, Scene i, of Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” regarding Gloucester’s loyalty to a leader who has gone mad. This quote is layered and complex– illustrated through collage, a layered medium, like the play and our society. This quote is poignantly relevant in U.S. politics today, signifying the necessity for change. I cannot vote in this election, but I would if I could. We are the future, so educating ourselves and exercising our right to vote is how we change our future. Politics can be overwhelming, scary, and difficult to approach, causing many people to avoid them altogether. Contrasting this, my collaging is impulsive, rejects avoidance, and relies on my intuition, but is simultaneously intentional. Nature imagery alludes to Shakespeare’s emphasis of natural order and the subject’s lack of eyes represents Gloucester’s physical blindness and the concept of blind loyalty.

  • Despite our difference in primary language, my mother and I both love art. When I struggle with my words, art has enabled me to communicate with my mother in a way that transcends language. To me, creativity is connection, but it is also communication without barriers.
