A Heart-to-Heart

Astra A.

  • For this piece, all I went in knowing was that I wanted to make something emotional. While I composed, I had in mind a conversation I’d had with a friend that meant a lot to me. We’d been slowly drifting apart, and we finally decided to discuss everything that had happened to our relationship. In the song, I attempted to mimic the feeling of understanding I got from that productive conversation and the connection I felt. The piece ended up using mostly pianos and keyboard-like instruments, since these were what felt most natural to me as I tried to convey that moment’s emotion. I aimed to make the instrumentation soft, slow, and peaceful, while also conveying how exciting and freeing it felt to have that mutual understanding. One of the most important parts of the composition was communicating the retrospective bittersweet feeling around it being our final talk.

  • Creativity, to me, means self-expression. Making music helps me process my emotions and often inspires me to be creative in other ways. Working through my thoughts when I make songs can help me be in tune with myself when I’m stressed out and even process feelings from past events.
