A Day’s Worth

A Day’s Worth is a collection of three poems representing the progression of time in, naturally, the span of a single day. However, I wrote these pieces across varying seasons and locations, with a perspective that concentrates on observations internally and externally. I penned the first poem, “Green hour,” in July, reflecting on a summer afternoon when my family traveled from the foggy San Francisco Peninsula to warmer Napa Valley. “Evening” was inspired by my experience on a school immersion trip to Tacoma, Washington. The content of the poem references my group’s stay on Vashon Island, and I mused on interpersonal and environmental interactions as sundown approached. Finally, I wrote “Portrait of My Nights (Late & Ever-Leaden)” in the confines of my room, my work forcing me to stay awake past midnight. Ultimately, this collection both cradles the passing seconds and lets them loose in order to absorb the current moment.

From my perspective, creativity is the personal and communal journey and imagination to express an individual experience. It can constitute grasping something of interest and then diversely communicating that focus. In a way, creativity is the human will to make a mark and decide whether to remove or remold it.
