a complicated kindness: a chant …inspired by the novel…

Ava R.

  • I recently read ”a complicated kindness” by Miriam Toews and found that the novel really spoke to me. There was one line in particular that stood out, the phrase ”something about dying” sandwiched between two ellipses. I felt compelled to articulate my fascination with both this line and the book itself. There was something there. What better way to express my admiration than a chant poem? Chants aren’t as strict as other styles of poetry, all they require, really, is repetition. There was something desperate and insistent, but restrained, in this work of fiction and in the ways it related to my own life, which I thought could be communicated through the use of repetition as a motif. There is ...something about dying... which insisted on becoming a poem.

  • Creativity is everything. It’s in all of us, it shapes the people we are, the lives we lead, and the impact we have. When we dare to express our creativity, we open the door for everyone else. Through sharing our creativity, we give others the freedom to do the same.
