I’m in my head a lot, and I wanted to create a piece that represents that. I was looking to juxtapose the more melancholic feeling the blue brings with the vibrant orange of the koi, which I chose to depict as they remind me of the story 「鯉魚跳龍」, or “carp leaping over the dragon gate”. It’s a Chinese story that illustrates how koi represent perseverance and the power to traverse and overcome obstacles— which is nice symbolism for when the going gets tough.
