Silence

Ethan G.

  • Silence is a bit of an indulgent song. Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche, it features histrionic vocals, punctilious melodies, and harsh lyrics. Within its radical outfit lies several thematic interrogations. There are two distinct vocal characters in “Silence” - first is a solitary, deep man (most directly influenced by Nietzsche’s writings and legacy); the other is the “crowd” in general. It is difficult to villainize either: one could dislike the pompous tone of the former, but does that (by itself) warrant such hatred from the latter? Literal silence during the chorus denotes the silence of the crowd. Before the final chorus, a loud “silence” as homonym denotes both the silence of the crowd and the man’s control over the crowd. Although the crowd decides to shun him, perhaps power still resides in him. These, among others, give this song its characteristic, oddly solemn tone. Composition took about two weeks to complete, with most of the work being done in the last few days. The first week and half were essentially the “setup” for a brief artistic torrent that resulted in “Silence.” Sort of reminiscent of how Nietzsche wrote Thus Spoke Zarathustra in ten days, I suppose. Enjoy the song!

  • I think creativity is the power to (1) identify something mundane as profound and (2) rephrase that thing into an artwork that contains your whole, original perspective in common language.
