Overcoming Addiction

David A.

  • This piece, dedicated to my friend who has recently overcome alcoholism, depicts the nasty stages of addiction. The piece opens with a happy sounding theme, however this is the euphoric illusion of happiness triggered by alcohol. This first section is followed by a new section that reveals more about the underlying problems causing my friend’s depression. As the piece goes on, the oscillation between happy and depressing sections continues, but towards the end, my friend starts to become more aware of the actual problems involved with his addiction. He, with support from me and some of his other friends, was able to quit drinking and live his life as a functioning person, realizing how life can never be perfect, a notion to the melancholy ending of this piece

  • To me, creativity means being able to express feelings, emotions, and ideas freely by means of art. Composition has been my dominant outlet of expression for almost 6 years and as a result of that, I have been able to live my life with less anxiety.
