Night and Day (arr. J. Pass) by C. Porter

Sam W.

  • Joe Pass is one of my guitar heroes. I’ve been amazed by his album Virtuoso and his ability to play solo jazz guitar. For this song, “Night and Day” by Cole Porter, Pass took a famous jazz standard and made it sound as if multiple guitars are playing. I set out to learn his version of this song because it's a beautiful example of the infinite possibilities and expressions one can convey with the guitar. It’s my first solo jazz guitar composition that I’ve learned - usually I play as part of a combo or ensemble, so this opened my eyes to a whole different way to view the guitar.

  • Creativity gives me the space to completely free my mind, tap into a different part of my brain, and stretch myself as a person. Jazz is the never-ending journey towards complete creative expression. I feel most creative when communicating with others through the language of jazz.
