As an introverted student who enjoys spending time alone indoors, the COVID pandemic served me extremely well. Even during the times when I was forced to go outside, there was no need for me to put any effort into my outward appearance; all it took to look presentable was putting on a mask. However, even after the worst of the pandemic, I would feel pressured to wear a mask due to insecurities surrounding my appearance. Ironically, my continuous efforts at wearing a mask weren’t to shield myself from the virus, but out of fear of showing my face to the outside world. In this sculpture, I attempt to convey this emotion of being trapped and in hiding, then transitioning to a state of mind where I can freely display my identity to the world without fear.
