Comfort Object

Josie L.

Clay, watercolor, porcupine spikes, toothpicks

  • I created a clay teddy bear with protruding porcupine spikes. This juxtaposition makes the viewer question their associations with comfort objects and their textures. I created the bear with air dry clay. Then I poked in the porcupine quills, finally I watercolored it once it dried. The work was intended to question viewers connotations with soft textures and comfort objects by juxtaposing sharp spines. The spines are intended instill a level of fear in the audience and create tensions with their association. I also wanted to bring attention to how much texture signifies comfort.

  • Creativity is the ability to express ideas indirectly. It coveys knowledge, concepts, dreams, and ideals in ways that not everyone would think about. Creativity allows your mind to create indirect associations and make ideas that enable others to interpret and provoke thoughts.
