Capricho Arabe by F. Tarrega arr. J. Peterson

Renn S.

  • Capricho Arabe was written in 1892 by Francisco Tarrega, who combined Spanish music with Arabian music. Playing Capricho Arabe on the ukulele means combining Spanish, Arabian, and Hawaiian influences, all in one piece. It's a very different style to most ukulele music, which is often bright. Capricho Arabe is a dark piece with a full rich sound, which is much harder to achieve on ukulele. To achieve the darker sound, I use nylon strings, which are used in classical guitar. To make a richer sound, I use fingerpicks, which give each note a whole, core sound. Despite the challenges of playing such a piece, the story of Capricho Arabe can still be told through the music.

  • To me, creativity means combining inspirations to create something new. To me, nothing is invented out of nowhere, there are always multiple inspirations that combine to make something new. With music, different inspirations can be used, which is what makes music interesting.
