Breaking Point

  • There is a special place in my heart dedicated to this drawing. I would often perfectly articulate a drawing in my imagination, but feel defeated after the execution doesn’t live up to my expectations. This drawing, however, completely captures how I imagined it, if not, better. It brings a scene from my original novella, “Worst Chapter of Moon’s Life” to life, where my main character, Moon, is in combat with creatures in the horrifying tropics of Treavax, my imaginary world. After an endless and tiring story involving an external war in Treavax, and an internal war of losing his best friend, Moon takes out his despair and built-up frustration through the fights. This drawing began as a quick sketch in my sketchbook, testing out a new pen I got. However, I was pleased with the pose and expression, quickly grew attached to it, and decided to digitalize it. I colored and rendered it on my phone’s screen, using a single finger. I committed more than seven hours to this piece, perfecting the expression, mood, shading, and other factors to flawlessly capture how intensely I envisioned the fight scene and how serious and raw Moon’s emotions were. I experimented with external sources for the background and leaf accents, and I smoothly incorporated them with the illustrated parts using blur, shadows, overlays, and vignettes. I also conveyed my unique art-style motifs through the bold highlights on his nose and cheekbones, white dots in his pupils, and ring of light on his hair.

  • Creativity is a significant part of my identity, and without it, I wouldn't be who I am today. Due to my creativity, ideas come to me in the snap of a finger, manifesting beautiful drawings, writings, and creations in every aspect of my life, from hobbies and extracurriculars to assignments.
