Before the Bloom

Emily P.

Watercolor & acrylic on paper

  • This piece is about the duality of going through a period of depression; the vulnerability as well as the ability to, once again, bloom. Much like baby birds must be nurtured before they are fledged, I find myself needing the same care when I go through moments of fear and hopelessness. Calendulas, glowing bright in the background, are symbolic of both despair as well as health and longevity, which further speaks to the duality of the emotion behind this piece. Whether it entails trusting someone or yourself, being able to be vulnerable is a beautiful thing that can foster so much individual growth, even in a state of resting. This piece is meant to capture the moment the bloom happens, where the foundation is set for me to feel confident in taking whatever the next step may be.

  • Creativity to me is being able to put my emotions into a visual piece of work, no matter how obscure it gets.
