The Song of Existence

Sebastian W.

  • My piece sets a passage of Heidegger’s Being and Time to an ensemble of a soprano voice, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, viola, and double bass. I started by dividing the text into four themes—inquiry, not knowing, vague understanding, and fact—then setting harmonic and melodic rules for each of them. Each rule would come into place when the text was following the theme associated with the rule, making the music part of the interpretation of the text.

  • Exploring and expressing my creativity has been a source of both joy and self-expression throughout my life. Whether improvising on the piano or composing a more planned-out piece, I have always found composition both fun and rewarding, a way to take a piece of myself and put it out into the world.
