The Madwoman

Naomi Z.

  • As part of a series where I explore the archetypes of women in literature, this photo was inspired by the madwoman trope in works such as Jane Eyre and The Yellow Wallpaper. Women have been diagnosed with hysteria, burned at the stake, and told we are mad for centuries. We are often seen as crazy or overly emotional. I depicted this concept by showing a woman in a wedding dress with what appears to be blood on her fingertips, hinting at some sinister act she has taken because of her insanity.

  • Creativity is crucial for me to reflect upon my experiences and interests. No matter what we make, our subconscious worries, wants, and lingering questions will shine through. Art helps me to not only understand myself but find a way to communicate it to others.
