Summer Colors

Avery C.

  • In early summer of 2021, my family and I took a short trip down to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. This was my first time ever being there, and despite it being somewhat of an expensive tourist trap, I enjoyed the day more than I expected. I saw the way the amusement park brought people together. It didn't matter who you were before, because once you got there, you were all the same - soaking up the coastal California sun. I wanted to capture this childlike sense of cheerfulness and hope, and the best place to do that was at the swings. The ride isn't very fast or complex; it has no overarching theme or height requirement. It's solely for those who want to experience a quintessential view of the beach and the sensation of flying. Standing in line to try it out for myself, I took "Summer Colors" on an iPhone camera. The vibrance of the ride stood out to me, contrasting well with the bright blue of the sky, and I felt that it accurately captured the youthful feeling of being airborne for an indefinite amount of time. Even now, nearly two years later, looking at this photo takes me back to the boardwalk, where I was younger and where each second in flight felt like an eternity.

  • I consider myself very academically oriented, but I often feel as though something is missing when I invest too much time into my schoolwork. Photography allows my brain to relax and take a more creative approach to life, while also bringing me a sense of joy that is hard to find elsewhere.
