Stages of Growth

Throughout this year, I've found myself through three stages of self-growth: awareness, self-discovery, and change. Each of these poems is a reflection of what I've found at each stage through a metaphor or event that has defined my life. "Chamomile tea" is the awareness stage. Despite growing up in the 21st century, teenage girls are continuously told that an outspoken demeanor will make them undesirable. The metaphor of the thorns is a play on my own name, and is meant to symbolize me reclaiming that aspect of myself, a refusal to give up myself for others. "A Runner's Escape" focuses on the self-discovery stage. In a similar manner to how I use poetry to release emotions, running has been another form of release and tracking growth. Running is a measure of your own growth and improvement, through running along your own path, which is why I chose it for the self-discovery stage. The final poem "Happy New Year" is representative of the change stage. Despite the discomfort that comes with change, it represents an inevitable part of our lives. "Happy New Year" represents the acceptance of this discomfort and acknowledges it; change is inevitable, what's important is what we make of it.

Creativity provides a medium of self-reflection, growth, and self-discovery. Through poetry, I'm able to delve deeper within my emotions, have a thorough understanding of myself and how I interpret events. Creativity within poetry provides me release, allowing myself to explore my own mind.
