Sonata Op. 31 No. 2 Arr. L. Beethoven

Molly C.

  • This piece is Beethoven's Sonata in D minor, op. 31, no. 2 "The Tempest". The first movement, Largo-Allegro, portrays a scene of turbulent ocean waters – from the calm before the storm to a tempest in full form – hence the name. Possibly originally inspired by Shakespeare's play of the same name, this sonata takes the listener on a journey and paints a vivid image of the turbulent sea.

Ever since I first heard this piece while searching for new repertoire, I was immediately drawn to the emotional aspect of it; filled with tension and anticipation, I knew I had to play this at one point in my life.

  • Music has always been a form of expression that I'm very emotionally attached to. When I play the piano, I develop a connection to the piece - I can direct all of my emotions toward it. I feel like I can embody the feeling of the piece and connect it to my own in ways I cannot do solely with words.
