satan's baptist

Sarah P.

  • I wrote this piece during a time of self-discovery. My English class was having us write essays where we would research a topic and personal narratives related to something that affects us personally. I based my essay around the impacts of childhood cancer, and interviewed my mom about what she went through when I was diagnosed at nine years old. Her responses brought up my grandmother, who died in August 2020. She was a devout Christian, but my mom and I practice Judaism. This made me think about the impacts my grandmother has had on me, even after her passing. I wrote these poems as part of a larger collection based around my relationship with religion and how my attitude toward religion combined with a cancer diagnosis has shaped my worldview.

  • Expressing my creativity allows me to reflect inwards and give voice to my thoughts in ways I'm not able to in other aspects of my life.
