Poppy & Honeysuckle

Poppy and Honeysuckle are inspired by the meanings of the flowers in Victorian flower language, which was the inspiration for my short poetry collection called “Flowers in the Window.” Poppies, which mean eternal sleep in Victorian flower language, were the inspiration for my first poem, which is about my fear of growing older and not leaving a lasting impression. Poppy is about time passing you by without taking you along with it, and how disorienting it is to look around and realize that nothing is the same as it was when you were younger, and you will never go back to being a child again. The second poem, Honeysuckle, is a poem that speaks to the different stages of love. Love can take on many forms and can live through many phases of life, but the common thread that binds the various feelings together is the pure happiness of being with someone or something you love. While both poems are unique, they explore ideas that matter to me and the process of writing them has given me a new perspective on getting older and finding myself.

Exploring my creativity has led me to find independence and develop my personal voice. Without creative outlets for me to discover different facets of myself, I wouldn't be half the person I am today.
