The Glances

Rena K.

  • For this piece, I was inspired by Cisneros's "House on Mango Street" and her brilliant way of using short vignettes to bring individual snippets of a character's life into a coming-of-age arc. Following Cisneros's tendency to include ideas of real-world-problems in her story, I chose to write about the experience of a high school girl who is scared of being called out for wearing a skirt and by pressures of society, begins to sexualize herself in a tight skirt. These internal thoughts of the fear of being judged for something as simple as a piece of clothing is an experience that I believe many teenagers to understand.

  • I use writing, creative writing in particular, and dance to express my creativity. These media act as a means of freedom, allowing me to deliver a message using more than just restricted to what I can say. It allows me to think before explaining a concept, emotion, or idea.
