  • I've included three poems, "Conditional Love Poem," "Stars 11/8," and "Dysphoria's Late Night Diary." All three poems are about dysphoria, specifically gender dysphoria, and were all originally journal entries created as a way for me to try to express what I was feeling, since it is easier to explain it through metaphors and ideas rather than simple terms. In "Dysphoria's late night Diary" I am listing out what is real and concrete, in response to feeling vague. For example, the name is striked through because in the moment I wasn't even sure what my name should be. "Stars (11/8)" has a similar tone. In this moment I felt that I related better to a shapeless constellation rather than my female body, which represents the experience of being nonbinary and not fitting into female or male physicalities. I felt that my truest self was best expressed by a shapeless, bright, burning constellation. In "Conditional Love Poem" I wrote about how gender dysphoria and being nonbinary has impacted my life and my relationships with others. I purposefully picked three poems with similar themes to function as a collection, and I hope that they are good examples of my writing style.

  • Poetry lets me turn simple emotions into complicated, much more beautiful, ideas. It allows me to process the many feelings that come with growing up and turn them into something I'm proud of. Through writing I can communicate the complicated ideas which would otherwise be difficult for me to voice.
