one50

Around two years ago, I decided to stop writing my lyrics down. Rather, I pushed myself to start freestyling entire songs, punching my vocals in line by line.
"One50" is a song which I recorded in this way. Although there are inevitably some imperfections and "flaws" throughout, I chose not to rerecord many of the vocals. In a freestyled recording, I find that there is a certain spontaneous energy which is captured. Rerecorded vocals tend not to have this same spark.
In the first half of the song I wanted to come off cool, calm, and collected as I toed the line between rapping and singing. In the second half, I wanted both the instrumental production and vocal performance to showcase the raw emotion of the piece.

“Dex! I’ve been listening to your new song nonstop - it hit me really hard.”
Music can assume many different shapes. A blanket, a shoulder to cry on, a loop-the-looping roller coaster. When my music resonates with my audience - making them feel seen, uplifted, and affirmed - that brings me joy.
