Mariposa

Mariposa was created in a series of portraits done on women of colors insecurities. When this piece was created I was going through not feeling good enough for my own art and stunted my own abilities. I found out that true beauty are the things people choose to criticize instead of acknowledge the overall beauty of something. I found any feeling can be art and decided to focus on POC women’s insecurities to acknowledge the fact that many comments young POC women face stick with them and shape the person they become. These colorist, misogynistic, ignorant comments make young women of color feel valueless and ugly. Being someone who has felt like this I decided to portray these comments in a young woman “Mariposa”. Mariposa is a term for the women I draw because they all go through some form of change and development as well as growth. The style of my art is inherently Latin-x and I wouldn’t want it any other way. This message is what my art is intended to be, resilience for people like me, balancing activism and understanding.

My art really means the world to me my ability to have the opportunity to create is something I am forever grateful for. As a young Latin-X woman I recognize that historically art is a coping mechanism for my people, With this my art creates connections, it creates understating and accessibility.
