Hari Narayana Kauthvam

The Hari Narayana Kauthvam is a piece that represents my cultural heritage. Practicing Hinduism, my family has been rooted in Sri Vaishnavism, or devotion to Lord Vishnu. The Kauthvam is a song highlighting aspects of a particular deity. In this case, Lord Vishnu represents balance and preservation. He works harmoniously in the Trimurthi (trinity of deities) balancing the other two deities, who embody powers of creation and destruction. As a dancer and Vaishnava, performing and practicing this piece meant embellishing nuances within poses, such as Lord Vishnu in his sleeping state, while also moving in an exact manner when depicting his various avatars, or states of being. To me, the Hari Narayana Kauthvam is symbolic, not only of spirituality and finding inner peace, but also of taking action for the greater good.

Creativity is my constant guide to understanding the world. With the classical dance form Bharatanatyam, I embrace culture and tradition, especially living continents apart from my motherland. With my pieces, I introspect on prevalent issues, expressing messages I believe like equality for all.
