Haibun Concerto

Christina D.

  • Winters in the bay are filled with quiet breezes and chilly months. The initial idea of my haibun arose during a rainstorm, while I was playing a Chopin nocturne on the piano with this particular coldness on my fingertips. Nocturnes by Chopin are generally expressive and dynamic, representing emotions from wistfulness to rage to sorrow. Though contrasting to the constant and uncontrolled storm outside, I felt as if the music and the rain were partners in a dance. I chose the haibun format to document the feeling, specifically, of this unique but somewhat brief experience.

More broadly, the appreciation of music and the arts makes us stop and contemplate what our purpose is in the busy world—much like the rainstorm—that is today. Recalling the Latin phrase "carpe diem," I urge people to slow down with this haibun. To appreciate ordinary things, to find peace in the present, and to realize that joy is all around.

  • Creativity, in any form, is an outlet through which I can better understand myself and my relationship to the world. Outside of it being something I enjoy practicing, creativity also helps me think deeper and more critically day-to-day. For me, inquisition and creativity go hand in hand.
