Family In A Blue Tarp House

  • Title: A Family in a Blue Tarp House

    Medium: Digital Photography with Iphone

When I was driving through the streets of India, what was most striking was that next to high-rise buildings and lavish malls, were patches of slums. Bright blue tarps draped over tent-like structures, and metal placed at awkward angles to support the huts from the breeze. And among these slums were people. One family caught my eye. A mother, sitting in front of the blue tarp house, combing her daughter's hair. Her other children surround her, smiling and enjoying the company of their mother. I smiled, looking at the seemingly joyful and perfect family. Yet they were still standing in front of the big blue tarps, hidden under the shadow of the big apartments surrounding them. Those kids would struggle to find food to eat, and not be able to cool down in the 100-degree temperatures. And that is when I took a photo. A photo of happiness and love, but also pain and struggle. A photo of a family that is in need of much, but is still satisfied. A photo of those who often get ignored, passed by those who are on their way to get to a large corporation, or shopping at a large mall. And now this is even more relevant, as we are struggling with terrible rains and flooding. I thought about how difficult rain must be for a family who lives in a flimsy tarp tent.

I took this photo to help the world notice this mother. And to help her give her children the future they deserve. For change can only be made if people observe. Take notice of those that are often forgotten, and look at the happy families standing in front of the blue tarp houses.

  • When I observe things that I wish changed, I want to share them with others. Photography allows me to capture real-life moments that are rarely noticed and appreciated in our world. I am grateful to use my creativity to bring awareness, and hopefully, action to make everyone's lives a little better.
