Close Enough

Luke S.

  • I've always loved jazz for how fun it is to play and the culture surrounding it, which is why this piece (and most others I've written) is written is that genre. More than anything, I love to write for bands but sometimes I need to scale it back and simplify it, so I chose to write a piece for piano as it's what I play. Although an extensive amount of theory went into the writing process, a lot of it was sitting down at the piano and letting my ear do the work. When it comes to jazz, once I've created a structure to work with, improvisation is the best way to get ideas on paper so I can go in an develop them into what suits my vision for the piece.

  • I constantly have musical ideas floating around in my head and putting them on paper and developing them into compositions is such a satisfying feeling to me, especially since as I learn and grow, each one is better than the last.
