In 2018, I participated in the Black Joy Poetry Workshop with Chapter 510 & the Dept. of Make Believe, and our work was published in Black Joy: an Anthology of Black Boy Poems, in 2019. To prompt this piece, my fellow poets and I were taken on a sensory walk around Downtown Oakland. We were asked to list every image, object or feeling we remembered. We were then asked to choose two images and link them to the theme we’d been discussing for the several weeks prior: black joy. This was my result.

Art has given me something to pour my love and dedication into, but only recently has it started loving me back. Never did I imagine people would see my work and tell me it personally touched them, but it’s happened more than once, ever since I started working in the public. It’s a beautiful feeling
