Badinerie by J.S. Bach

Eric K.

  • Badinerie from Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in b Minor, BWV 1067, was originally composed for solo flute and orchestra. Because of its quick runs and fast tempo, this composition is considered a show piece for flautists. As an interesting aside, this music appears in the movie "Hilary and Jackie" which is about Jacqueline du Pré (a cellist) and her sister Hilary du Pré (a flautist), and it is one of the inspirations for me and my sister, Katie. When preparing to perform this piano duet, we made sure to capture the lively yet intense character, while at the same time trying to emulate the virtuosic style of the flute.

  • As a musician, I believe that going beyond the score and expressing my emotions in a unique manner is what makes for a meaningful performance. Creativity is the artistic choices that one makes when thinking about character, phrasing, and dynamics, and my interpretation of the music makes it my own.
