The Great Fairy Fountain by K. Kondo, Arr. E Zimmerman

Benjamin W.

  • This piece was originally composed by Koji Kondo for a harp. In phrasing this performance, I kept the idea of the harp in mind- specifically for the runs of arpeggios. Additionally, I keep the thought of a firefly in mind when performing this piece. The reason for this association is that they twinkle and glow, and when pursued they go from a lazy state of buzzing around to quickly flying off. This mental image helped me capture the differences in tempos present for various sections of the piece.

  • Creativity, within the context of piano performance for me means taking the intentions and writings of composers and working the phrasing into something new. I use the piano to create a new landscape using traditional techniques much like my drawings with a pen.
