Impatient Brother

  • Every single day of the year, I listen to music every waking moment to the point where I am listening to music right now as I’m typing this. My headphones can practically be glued onto my ears whenever I’m by myself. Over time I start noticing aspects of a song that aren’t usually noticed at first glance (mostly due to the fact that I’ve probably have listened to the song hundreds of times) and begin to learn the nooks and crannies that the artists may or may not have intended to leave. Although I don’t have any instrumental or musical skills, I do have skills and experiences with filmmaking. Like music and songs, I not only want to make appealing and entertaining films but also be able to make films that people can watch multiple times and provide depth past the flat surface of the screen through experiences, themes, and lessons I want to share to others.

All of the short films that I’ve made or want to make are inspired by my life experiences and view of the world. I’ve been very fortunate and grateful to have parents that are willing to support me and my passions so I want to try my best not only for myself but for my parents who not only gave birth to me but also have always encouraged me. Unfortunately, the world isn’t as supportive and encouraging to everyone, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic where people are losing their jobs, loved ones, and missing life experiences. The pandemic has striped precious, once in a life school years for my generation and I want to share my experiences and show feelings of neglect, isolation, stress, and fear of missing out in my films but in my creative comedic voice.

One of the most important aspects of a film that I strive to include in my work is relatability. What I mean by that is being able to establish a connection with the audience by having them relate and have something in common with a character, situation, or environment that is being presented in a source of media. An example of this is in one of my favorite movies of all time, Isle of Dogs, directed by Wes Anderson. This is one of my favorite movies because not only do I love and adore dogs but because I can relate to the boy who finds himself lost and confused on an island of dogs. At the time of watching this film, I was in the middle of the process of going to a new school which felt like it would be a foreign and scary place to me, something that the boy in the movie also faced. This connection I have with the film made me learn to try experiences before I make a judgment. I’ve taken this lesson to heart, leading me to try things outside of my comfort zone which I end up enjoying. I hope that my films can someday have the same impact that the Isle of Dogs gave me.

  • Creativity means expressing my comedic creative voice through the form of filmmaking. For me at least, creativity in my films means to convey lessons and themes I have learned from past experiences or inspirations from other forms of media and entertainment.
