Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major, op. 35, II. Canzonetta

Madison L.

  • Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is part of the canon of violin repertoire, with its gorgeous melodies and fiery virtuosity. The second movement is a Canzonetta---which is a short, Italian song. Unlike the first and last movements, the challenge of the Canzonetta does not lie in technical skill or virtuosity; instead, it lies in the ability to convey countless different emotions and stories. Especially with Tchaikovsky, a composer who loved utilizing repetition, I had to find ways to make each repetition of the melody in this movement say something different. Additionally, while I did take inspiration from countless recordings, I tried to use this second movement to find my own voice---experimenting with where I wanted to take time to create my own rendition of this song. With this process, I have found ways to make this piece that is centuries old into my own.

  • Creativity is how humans share their emotions and experiences. While some may categorize it as doing something unique or out-of-the-ordinary, I think it is simply about using a medium to share something sincere and true. For music, this requires me to turn inward and find what I want to share.
