Moonlight Sonata

This piece is choreographed by my teacher, Marina Osipova, under the beautiful, world-renowned, Beethoven composition, “Moonlight Sonata.” Using such a legendary classical arrangement and applying something of our own can be daunting, but it was a valuable and eye-opening experience. My teacher, Marina Osipova, and I developed movements of different speeds, emotions, and sizes as a way to interpret and express the melancholy and yearning tone of the beginning of the piece. Once the music suddenly diverges dramatically, sharp and larger movements are made to express and exaggerate the feeling of turmoil and chaos. The transformation of the costume helps to enhance the suspense, not only the music, but in the choreography. The beige costume represents the lone moon and once the music changes unexpectedly, the costume seamlessly transforms into a dark purple color to imitate the lake that the moonlight is reflected on. I believe this was a unique opportunity to use a classical masterpiece and develop a contemporary piece that showcases a story composed of movement about this simple scene of a full moon reflecting in the waters, yet its complicated story.

Creativity is within every individual. It is the ability to create something original for enjoyment or in order to solve various problems in the world. It is a process of getting to know my individual self, experiencing difficulties in trial and error, and, in the end, representing my true self.
