Tiruppavai

The dance I’m performing is called "Tiruppavai" which is a poem by Saint Andal in praise of the Hindu God Lord Krishna. The piece ends with a Tarangam which is a dancing on the edges of a brass plate which is a specialty of the dance form (Kuchipudi) which I practice. Andal extols Lord Krishna and asks all the girls to come and bathe and put on beautiful clothes during the margali (January) month and pray to Lord Krishna.
I have choreographed it in rhythmic steps and Karana movements (continuous movement of limbs). The plate sequences are added to give beauty to the rhythm and to the beats. I researched and put in suitable and appropriate steps to match the rhythm of the beats.

Dance and painting has been in my life since since I was a child. Thus art represents life for me. While expressing myself through dance, I forget myself and I become one with the space. Forgetting myself, I feel free as a person. Creativity is liberation of body, mind and soul for me.
