Flowers of Pyeongan (Original)

Hyeunjoo C.

  • My artwork is the performance of improvised gayageum minyo using a 12-string sanjo-style gayageum. As a Korean, my love for my instrument compels me to play it to express my deepest emotions and feelings, showing through music what I can ill describe with my words. The process to make minyo is complex, and involves me learning various techniques by examining recordings of gayageum masters and performers. From there I try and apply those techniques to my playing, coming up with musical phrases or connections which I then use to create a full minyo piece. I then refine the piece before playing it and utilizing my skills to the fullest.

  • Music is the great beacon in my life that lifts my soul upwards. Each pluck of the string of my gayageum coaxes out not only a note but the deepest joy present in the human experience, the beautiful language of music that we all share.
