Falling Beauty

Skylar R.

  • I have always had a special place in my heart for nature. Something about the different scenes and how beautiful the colors, shapes and textures transpire is so mesmerizing. Landscapes have always inspired my pieces, however this one in particular caught my eye. In "Falling Beauty" I used a plethora of mediums to convey the movement and texture in the scene. Whilst I worked on this piece, I envisioned myself hopefully visiting a place like it one day. Although it's quite simple, there are many key components added to bring it all together. Using the emphasis of flowers falling down to the lower margin of the piece I was able to convey the feeling of tranquility, like how leaves would blow in the wind.

"Falling Beauty" romanticizes the simple things in life. For something as unembellished as flowers blowing in the wind, we take our natures' beauty for granted. When I worked on this piece, I tried very hard to capture the intricate details in it. I used colored pencil for the branch and tissue paper for the petals in the wind. As its a relief sculpture, from different angles you can see the depth added. The petals are elevated which depicts the feeling that they are falling closer to you. I tried to see the simple yet beautiful finishes in this piece, and tried to capture its essence. Although no one can replicate natures true beauty, its amazing to see how artists all over the world interpret it. I hope the piece will inspire the same feeling in my audience when they see it!

  • My artwork has always been a safe-space for me where I can convey my emotion into the pieces I create. I love it because when I'm feeling sad, overwhelmed or even just happy, art is always a way to express myself, and it will stick my my side throughout my whole life.
