Chanson Dans La Nuit by C. Salzedo

  • At the end of every year, my harp teacher encourages us to videotape ourselves playing our pieces that we’ve learned. More often than not, we catch a mistake in the tempo or notes, and we videotape it again until we have a result that satisfies us. In this piece, Chanson Dans La Nuit by Carlos Salzedo, I decided to put a little spin to the original work. In the pieces that I play, I really enjoy using my own interpretation to create a story based off of the song, in order to get in touch with the piece and play it to it’s full potential. Using a dramatic retelling of a fantasy world that exists in peace which escalates into a battle between dragons and a knight, it allows me to make fun uses of the tempo and execution for this piece.

  • Since each harpist has their own unique perspective, sheet music is written in different ways, which can often appear confusing at first. In a way, creativity is the same thing. My own imagination and creativity impacts my interpretation of the world, whether that’s when I’m playing the harp or not.
